Terrytown, Louisiana

Terrytown is a town located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana on the West Bank of the Mississippi River. It is a suburb of Greater New Orleans. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 25,430.

census of 2000, there are 25,430 people, 9,344 households, and 6,793 families residing in the town. The population density is 2,646.5/km² (6,862.8/mi²). There are 9,656 housing units at an average density of 1,004.9/km² (2,605.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 55.90% White, 34.66% African American, 0.51% Native American, 3.48% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 2.71% from other races, and 2.69% from two or more races. 8.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 9,344 households out of which 38.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.2% are married couples living together, 20.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.3% are non-families. 22.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.72 and the average family size is 3.19. In the town the population is spread out with 29.0% under the age of 18, 10.1% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 7.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 90.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.9 males. The median income for a household in the town is $36,897, and the median income for a family is $41,963. Males have a median income of $31,421 versus $23,241 for females. The per capita income for the town is $16,725. 15.5% of the population and 13.6% of families are below the poverty line.
