DVR stands for Digital Video Recorder and allows television viewers to record programs on a hard disk.

Analog DVRs digitize and compress analog television inputs. Digital DVRs receive signals from broadcasters like DIRECTV.

Companies that have developed DVRs are TiVo and ReplayTV. These products are marketed under several brand names like Phillips, Sony and Panasonic.
