Akron Township is a township located in Tuscola County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 1,589.

Geography

\nAccording to the
United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 147.4 km² (56.9 mi²). 137.0 km² (52.9 mi²) of it is land and 10.4 km² (4.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 7.05% water.

Demographics

\nAs of the
census2 of 2000, there are 1,589 people, 602 households, and 441 families residing in the township. The population density is 11.6/km² (30.0/mi²). There are 767 housing units at an average density of 5.6/km² (14.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 95.85% White, 0.19% African American, 0.76% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.76% from other races, and 1.26% from two or more races. 4.59% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 602 households out of which 32.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.6% are married couples living together, 6.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.6% are non-families. 23.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.01. In the township the population is spread out with 25.9% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 14.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 103.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.3 males. The median income for a household in the township is $36,891, and the median income for a family is $43,056. Males have a median income of $32,326 versus $21,548 for females. The per capita income for the township is $16,487. 11.7% of the population and 6.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 12.9% are under the age of 18 and 14.3% are 65 or older.
